A few days ago, we were contacted by the owner of Miners Need Cool Shoes for a review of their site. MNCS is a Minecraft skin editor that allows you to create or modify skins in 3D, a skin gallery full of thousands of user-submitted skins and skin parts, and an iOS app for editing on the go.

The skin editor features many tools that Photoshop users will find familiar, such as color picker, paint bucket, multiple layers, and color filters. You can also toggle off any part of the model to get a better view. You can even import the skin of any player to edit, making it easy to grab your own skin. When you’re done editing, you can save your work to a PNG image, upload it to your Minecraft profile, or export it to the site’s gallery to share with others. The only things I can think of that the editor is missing are a redo button, in case you accidentally undo something, and a zoom feature.

One thing that caught my interest about the editor was that it’s updated to the new 1.8 skin format, meaning you can edit the full-body hat layer, and unmirrored limbs. The downside to this is that any files you export won’t work with the game until the new skin format has officially been adopted.

The site’s design is very sleek and clean. I especially like the background and navigation bar. If I had to offer some design criticism, I would recommend making the buttons on the editor a bit more intuitive. I kept forgetting which one was the import button.

Overall, Miners Need Cool Shoes is a great free tool for designing skins, especially if you don’t have Photoshop, or prefer to edit in 3D.
